Tropical Spanish

Venice

July 2018

Tropical modernism takes center stage at this Venice Beach house. A young, well-travelled professional and surf enthusiast saw the potential in restoring this 1920s Spanish-style bungalow, which had lost much of its character in a previous 1990s remodel.

We reconfigured the floor plan to improve the circulation of the home, before stripping the building back to its studs and undertaking comprehensive work to re-service and re-imagine the space with historically appropriate interior architectural detailing. With a faithful nod to the past while embracing a simple and organic material palette, this coastal home is now a surfer’s paradise.

By opening up the cramped and dated 1990s kitchen and adjacent dining room, space was created for a bespoke light-filled dining nook and a spacious kitchen island.

New millwork throughout offered the opportunity to thoughtfully integrate storage via charming, of-the-era built-ins.

“Beatriz takes deep pride in her craft. She has a great eye for design and, importantly, was not afraid to push me when necessary. The most important decision I made in the entire renovation process was deciding who to trust, and with Beatriz I made the right choice.”

A Surfer's Paradise

Historic details such as the Spanish arches, exposed wood ceiling beams, niched bookcases, arched fireplace, stucco walls and a variety of colorful talavera tile and Spanish cement tile patterns were reintroduced to the home.

A galley kitchen and separate dark dining room was opened up to create a large, less compartmentalized space with a new wide folding glass wall connecting the indoor to the outdoor. The master bedroom benefitted from an updated bathroom and new shower enclosure, alongside a walk-in closet.

The interior materials and furnishings were kept simple and organic, with a focus on quality to reflect both a practical mid-century modern approach and a relaxed tropical vibe.

Windows and doors appropriate to the building’s period and style were sourced. A full redesign of the front porch entrance, curb gate and external landscaping was also included in the project.
